Poll #565402 Footnotes

Perfect Pedal Pitch

I usually read the footnote as soon as I read the marker for it.
I usually don't read footnotes.
I often defer reading the footnote until after finishing the paragraph/section/page/whatever.
I run an internal dialog that determines how interesting the footnote is likely to be.
The above dialog script's execution time can be longer than it would take to read the footnote.
I do something else, bizarre and/or NSW with footnotes.
I would have noticed multiple answers are allowed without this reminder.
Regret nothing!

...that was interesting.

I realize this is an old poll, but I was just looking through your journal, and I’ve been reading a book with lots of footnotes, so I have recent data fresh in my head. The something else bizarre and/or NWS that I do with footnotes is skim through all the footnotes for a chapter in advance, or at least some of them, so that I know in advance which numbers are only citations and which ones have interesting stuff. So I’ll see that the first 6 footnotes are just citations, and footnote 7 is half a page of dialogue, and then I read through the chapter until I get to footnote 7, and then read the footnote. I generally read all the citations anyway (at least to the point of noticing whether it’s an author or work I’ve heard of), but not necessarily interspersed with the text.
