[Boston] contractor recommendations?
16th-Dec-2010 10:16 am
dragons
I am looking for estimates and professional help with:
  • heating (radiator system), plumbing

  • insulation

  • siding / paint / gutters
If you have any recommendations for people to work with, I'd appreciate them. Thanks! :)

I may also be looking for some appliances (stove, fridge, ovens, laundry, etc.) if this social network has any available in the next month or two.

Thank you! :)

We have an electric dryer we'd be happy to release into the wild. No charge. It's functioning fine, but we've purchased an upgrade. The caveat would be that the new dryer is on the first floor and needs to be on the second, and the old dryer is on the second floor and would need to get down to the first. I am happy to be the first person in the moving team, but would need a second.

What town is the house in? I have a gutter guy, but I don't know his service radius. We also have electricians and plumbers we've been please with who rewired our old knob & tube wiring, and replaced an ancient furnace/hot water system, respectively.

Mass Saves is an energy program that both we and miss_chance used for energy upgrades. At the time, at least, they were offering zero-interest loans for certain efficiency upgrades (heating, insulation, windows, etc.) and who also put us in touch with our insulation guys.

Yay! I can totally help move some dryers! Thanks!

The house is in Medford. The gutters need work. :)

Mass Saves has a bunch of useful info; I will follow some of that. I may need to replace the heating system, but I won't really know until I get some people to look at it. I will need to install a new hot water heater.

(I don't get the house for another couple weeks, but I'm starting to get some estimates now.)

Do you need those dryers moved sooner rather than later? I am happy to help whenever. Legal nonsense is likely to delay my closing for an unspecified amount of time, but I could stash the dryer somewhere if needed. Thought I should check. :)

Not at all. Everything is neatly tucked out of the way, so we can hold on indefinitely for your situation to clear up. No worries here.

I finally have a place to put a dryer! When would you like to move them? :)

I can recommend Scott Sica as a general contractor; Sillari Plumbing for plumbing; and Stephen Frederick for siding (in my case, aluminum) and gutters. I can also get you a membership to Angie's List for $15/year (they're running a "give a membership for cheap as a gift" promo).

Charlie Sillari is our plumber, and we love him. He apparently also does heating: 210 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143-3198, (617) 776-0370, Open Sun 7am-8am.

For other jobs, we've had good luck with Angie's List. It's cheap to join and totally worth it.
